Journey of Hope

This film presents a brief history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Western Canada and more specifically in Alberta. It touches upon the spiritual journey of Ukrainian Catholics who were part of the Great Immigration that began in 1891 and ended with World War I. They were members of a Church founded in Ukraine in 988 by missionaries of the Byzantine Church of Constantinople. Their Ukrainian Church renewed their union with Rome in 1596. They were Slavs, immersed in the piety and mystical traditions of the Eastern Christian Church for 900 years, who suddenly, found themselves on the frontier in Canada’s West.

In their new country there were no Ukrainian Byzantine churches, no familiar priests of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Church in Western Canada was largely French-speaking. The other Churches were English and Protestant. The Ukrainian Catholics felt themselves spiritually and culturally marooned in a strange land.

Father Albert Lacombe, the great Oblate missionary to the Aboriginal and Metis People of the West was moved by the spiritual plight of the Ukrainians. Unable to offer them spiritual consolation because he did not know their language, he wept over their fate. Though he was French Canadian, he travelled to Ukraine in 1900 to confer with 35 year-old Metropolitan Archbishop Andrey Sheptytsky, the spiritual father of Ukrainian Catholics. In the face of great difficulties the two men were able to organize the foundations of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Western Canada. Metropolitan Sheptytsky sent four Basilian Missionaries and four Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate to Alberta. They arrived in Edmonton on October 31, 1902. This handful of missionaries established themselves at Mundare, Alberta, in the spring of 1903. Thus began the foundation of the Ukrainian Catholic Church In the West.

The film presents the drama of this foundation. It looks at the journey of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Alberta through the periods of Immigration, the Great War, the Prosperity of the 1920's and the lows of the Great Depression. It touches on the tragedy of World War II and the Stalinist suppression of the Church in Ukraine. The film depicts the optimism of the Church through the 1950's and 60's and the decline of the 1970's It describes the renaissance of the Ukrainian Catholic Church during the last years of the 20th century, ending with the celebration of the Centennial in November 2002. The story of the church is one of local drama and adventure.
