Mundare museum celebrates 50 years
wcr.ab.ca
An anniversary is a unique and significant event, whether it occurs in the life of a person or in the life of an organization. "Over the hill," they say, when it comes to half a century in the life of a person, but half a century in the life of an organization seems to be still going uphill. The latter sentiment certainly applies to the Ukrainian Basilian Fathers Museum in Mundare - one of few museums in Alberta that can boast 50 years of existence - which celebrated the climax to its golden jubilee on May 25. Dignitaries present included Archbishop Lawrence Huculak, head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Canada; Bishop Paul Chomnycky of New York and Premier Ed Stelmach.

The diversity of the Catholic Church was on display with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy June 18 at the International Eucharistic Congress. Archbishop Lawrence Huculak of Winnipeg, the metropolitan of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada, celebrated the two-hour Byzantine liturgy inside a packed hockey arena adjacent to the Expo Cite grounds that was transformed into a "eucharistic city" for the June 15-22 congress.

Even the celebration of Mass is at times made into a point of division, the Byzantine-rite archbishop of Winnipeg lamented during his homily at the International Eucharistic Congress. Archbishop Lawrence Huculak of Winnipeg for Ukrainian Catholics gave the homily at the celebration of the Divine Liturgy today in Quebec. The Eucharistic Congress is under way in Canada through Sunday.

Ukrainian Catholics urged to take up call to evangelize
wcr.ab.ca
Ukrainian Catholics are taking seriously their duty to pass the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world. Some 150 bishops, priests, deacons and religious men and women from across Canada gathered at the Chateau Louis Conference Centre May 26-28 to discuss how to evangelize through catechesis. “The Church has a duty to hand on to others what we ourselves believe—the Word of God, the teaching of God,” Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church worldwide told participants May 26. And he said education through catechesis must begin at home. “We have to speak to those who are in the parish already to make sure that those who are our parishioners really fully know what they believe,” he said.

Two Catholic prelates in Edmonton, Alberta, have joined in a public statement of concern about the "Body Worlds" exhibit of human cadavers. Edmonton's Archbishop Richard Smith and Bishop David Motiuk, the leader of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton, reminded the faithful: "The human body retains its dignity even in death."

The Body Worlds exhibit will open in Edmonton in just over two weeks, and its promoters promise the bodies and body parts on display will give visitors a "one-of-a-kind anatomy and physiology lesson." But some critics are asking visitors to consider the display as something more than a mere educational tool. In a joint statement released Monday, leaders of Edmonton's Catholic communities urged parishioners to consider "the faith implications" involved in Body Worlds, which is scheduled to open June 13 at the Telus World of Science.

ugcc.org.ua

God sows his love with wild abandon
wcr.ab.ca
Unlike farmers, God sows his love, mercy and forgiveness in almost a carefree, even wasteful way, says Ukrainian Catholic Bishop David Motiuk. And those who have experienced this excess of God's love must share it with others. Motiuk, the bishop of the Edmonton Ukrainian Eparchy, is a farmer's son and speaks from experience. "If you grew up on a farm or planted a garden, you know that we (farmers) do things rather painstakingly," he said March 8. "We don't just throw out the seeds to the wind and offer a prayer and hope for the best. We prepare the soil and we plant the crops, taking care to plant each seed just so - not too much, not too little, not too deep, not too shallow. (But) our ways are not the ways of the Lord and the Lord's ways are not our ways," the bishop said. "The Lord's ways are filled with overabundance. He sows his love, mercy and forgiveness in almost a carefree, even wasteful way."

umoloda.kiev.ua

The Head of the UGCC about the most important things on the days of the Christmas holidays
ugcc.org.ua
The most important in those days is that to which the Church invites us. More precisely: to give due glory to Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God who comes to us human beings. To give Him glory and at the same time to consider what His coming means for us. Because He is the key person in our life. There is no one more important than Jesus Christ who came to earth in order to tell us about God, God the Father, about this loving Father who created us, who presents us with His gifts, His graces. This is the most important.
ugcc.org.ua
ugcc.org.ua
Imperceptibly but fairly quickly the Christmas holidays are approaching. And as this usually happens, we are starting to determine how and where we will spend these holy days: in the family circle or in the circle of the more extended family, at home or perhaps in some restful place. But some probably think about these festivals with great pain, for, because of professional reasons, study or military service, or because of work which must be performed far away from their native land in order to support the family, they will be forced to celebrate far from their native home and parish. The second question that we ask ourselves is how to decorate the house, what to put on the festive table, what presents to give our neighbors? And, being busy with such thoughts, we will live through the Christmas holidays; they will pass like every year, and everything will be forgotten.

As a 15-year-old, Yar Slavutych witnessed the starvation death of many people in rural Ukraine, including his little sister, grandmother, grandfather and his neighbour Dovhal. But it is the death of his grandfather that he remembers most vividly because the emaciated old man died in his arms, totally weakened by hunger. "The last time I brought him some milk and a piece of bread he died in my arms," recalled Slavutych, 90, in a recent interview. "But before he died, he took an oath from me to survive and tell the whole world how the Soviets destroyed Ukraine."

Bishop David Motiuk is rejoicing at being able to return to his home province and being able to carry out his work in Alberta. Born in Vegreville, Alberta and raised in Lavoy, Alberta, Bishop Motiuk is very familiar with his diocese, a familiarity that affords him a special connection with the area. "It is wonderful to be here. I know we must answer God's call wherever we are invited to serve, but to be amongst one's family and friends is a blessing," says Motiuk. As Bishop of the Ukrainian Eparchy of Edmonton, Bishop Motiuk is quick to point out the importance of education and especially Catholic education. "Catholic education responds to the call to help young people reach their potential," explains Motiuk. "They recognize that they are created in God's image."
ugcc.org.ua

Mundare is the better today for having had Dr. Nicholas Strilchuk as its friend and town doctor. For four decades the beloved Strilchuk gave of himself unselfishly to the community as a physician, volunteer and humanitarian - never sparing himself to bring comfort and healing to the sick. A University of Alberta graduate, Strilchuk began practising in Mundare in 1927. He played a pivotal role in helping the Basilian Fathers and the Ukrainian Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate realize their dream of a proper medical facility for Mundare and area. The Mundare General Hospital - now the Mary Immaculate Regional Hospital - opened in 1929, just two years after Strilchuk's arrival.

Because of his innumerable contributions to the community, the Basilian Fathers Museum is currently paying tribute to Strilchuk with an exhibit called Beyond the Call of Duty and a 25-minute documentary on Strilchuk's life produced by Dagmar Rais, the museum curator.

This synod will take place in Philadelphia (USA).

"As the Synod of Bishops is the highest legislative Church body, for us, it is very important to hear the opinions of the faithful about those questions, which have to be examined by bishops. For that reason, this year as well as last year, we are appealing to all our faithful to give us their suggestions, wishes, ideas about the basic topics of the Synod. We hope that with those suggestions we will be able to prepare and to conduct a valuable gathering of the Patriarch Synod of Bishops UGCC," said the bishop.

Working Miracles in Ukraine
cnewacanada.ca
Want to work miracles in Ukraine? For years, Ukrainians with special needs – deprived of schooling and jobs – lived in isolation, excluded from their communities.

That is until Zenia Kushpeta, a Canadian Ukrainian, founded the Emmaus Centre in Lviv. Emmaus Centre, without any government support, runs programs and activities enabling these special people to learn job skills and make friends – ending their isolation. But Emmaus Centre urgently needs your help!

Legendary Oblate missionary Father Albert Lacombe and Archbishop Émile Legal both played a crucial role in establishment of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Parish. They not only took care of the spiritual needs of the early settlers, but also pressed Rome and Galicia for Ukrainian Catholic priests when the settlers began crossing to other churches.

"I would say Bishop Legal and Father Lacombe genuinely cared about Ukrainian Catholics," says Serge Cipko, who is currently completing a book on the history of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Parish. "I would say they played an important role in the establishment of St. Josaphat Parish."

Pope encourages Ukrainians to carry their faith to other nations
catholicnewsagency.com
"Ukraine, which because of its geographical position has always had the vocation of being a gateway between East and West," said the Holy Father, "has over these years begun and developed a policy of openness and collaboration with other countries on the continent." He expressed his appreciation for this state of affairs which, he said, is contributing "to restoring Europe to its true dimension, ensuring conditions of fruitful exchange between ... the two cultural lungs that forged its history."

“I am sure that the Ukrainian nation - its life, culture and institutions profoundly impregnated with the Gospel - will concern itself with carrying the dynamism of its identity to other nations, while preserving its original characteristics. Indeed it is vital, in a world ever more strongly marked by globalization, to favor a serious and profound dialogue between cultures and religions, not in order to reduce them all to some impoverished syncretism but to help them develop mutual respect and cooperate ... for the common good. This will enable a reduction of the ever-present sources of tension and conflict between groups and nations, and guarantee everyone the conditions for lasting peace and development."
