ANNOUNCEMENTS

Pope Benedict XVI announced a special “Year of the Priest,” which began on June 19, 2009, the Latin Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, and will conclude on the same date in 2010. The year, entitled “The Faithfulness of Christ, the Faithfulness of the Priest,” is an opportunity to contemplate the work of the Lord, who willed to institute the ministerial Priesthood, linking it inseparably to the Eucharist, the source and summit of the life of the Church. The year provides us with a special opportunity to honour our priests, who, though the gift of the Holy Spirit received in sacred ordination, participate in the mission and power of Christ the Pastor. To mark the Year of the Priesthood in the Eparchy of Edmonton, Bishop David invites each parish or parish district to honour their priest(s) at a special dinner following the Sunday Divine Liturgy, or on another day, during either the month of October or November, 2009. During the dinner, each priest will be invited to share his vocation story, thereby highlighting the manner by which each of us can freely hear and respond willingly to the Lord who calls us by means of the Holy Spirit.

Bishop David issued a pastoral letter on Bill C-384, a private member’s bill, which was introduced into the House of Commons by Bloc Quebecois MP Franicine Lalonde (pastoral letter attached). This bill seeks to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada, and may be presented for debate in the Commons in late September. Parishioners are encouraged to speak out clearly in defence of life with the power of their numbers by:

  • becoming well informed on this issue;
  • contacting their local Member of Parliament; and
  • mailing postage-free postcards to their MP’s (available through the parishes).

Pastors are invited to include a prayer intention during the celebration of the Divine Liturgy such as: “That our country will resist all efforts to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide, and the shall always respond to suffering in ways that honour human life and dignity, let us pray to the Lord.”

Bishop David appointed Deacon Danylo Kuc as Director of Liturgy, Eparchy of Edmonton. Deacon Danylo recently defended his Doctorate in Eastern Christian Studies at the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute, Saint Paul University, Ottawa. The Director of Liturgy works under the direction of the Eparchial Liturgical Commission and is mandated to:

  • prepare liturgical texts and translations;
  • provide catechetical information regarding liturgy and the sacraments;
  • research questions of liturgical importance; and
  • provide guidelines for assuring an overall best quality liturgical experiences for the faithful.
