During the month of November, the Eparchy of Edmonton conducts its annual collectionfor the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. Each year the Synod of Ukrainian Catholic Bishops and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops are asked to speak out, give leadership and provide guidelines for the faithful on a wide variety of topics in our daily lives. In order for our bishops to be able to make proper judgements on modern topics, they must have the benefit of research and expert advice. Research and gathering information requires staff, time and money. Findings ways to provide channels to the bishops from the people of God and ways of disseminating the thinking of the bishops to the people of God also requires staff, time and money. Through the yearly bishops’ collection, an appeal is made to all Catholics to be generous in supporting the work of their bishops. The Alberta Catholic Bishops issued a Letter for Catholic Education Sunday, which is celebrated November 1. The theme of the letter is Catholic Education: Good News for All.” Also attached are some key messages and daily prayers that can be used when celebrating and promoting Catholic education in your communities. The Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada (Eparchy of Edmonton) celebrates its annual Brotherhood Day on November 1. This year’s theme focuses on the Year of the Priesthood, with special emphasis on Blessed Martyr Emilian Kowcz, proclaimed by the 2008 Synod of Bishops as Patron of Priests for the Ukrainian Catholic Church. 2009 Presbyteral Council Meetings: 2:00 – 5:00 pm, Chancery Office: November 2. College of Consultors Meetings – in conjunction with Presbyeral Council meetings, or as otherwise convoked. 2009 Clergy Conferences: 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, November 3 (Holy Trinity Parish, Vegreville). Subdeacon Jim Nakonechny will be ordained to the sacred order of the Diaconate by Bishop David on November 8, 10:00 am at Saint Josaphat Cathedral in conjunction with the Cathedral’s annual parish feast day or praznyk. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (Edmonton Branch) invites clergy, religious and laity to commemorate the 76 th Anniversary of the 1932-1933 Holodomor/Famine in Ukraine with a special memorial service at City Hall, Edmonton, on Saturday, November 28, at 12:30 pm. This year’s guest speaker is Honourable Senator Raynell Andreychuk, a Canadian Senator, lawyer, former judge and diplomat. The Ukrainian Museum Society of Alberta will hold its annual Concert of the Carols, 2:30 pm, Sunday, January 17, 2010, at Saint Josaphat Cathedral. This year’s presentation is hosted by the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton. ANNOUNCEMENTS Pope Benedict XVI appointed Most Reverend Luigi Ventura, currently Apostolic Nuncio to Canada, as Apostolic Nuncio to France. The Holy Father recently received in papal audience the Patriarchs and Major Archbishop of the Eastern Catholic Churches in response to a request from the prelates. At the same time, the Holy Father announced a Special Synod on the Church in Middle East. See attached for further information. The President of the CCCB has issued a public statement on private member's Bill C-384 and its proposal to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada. Attached for your information is the text of the statement by Archbishop V. James Weisgerber. Salt + Light Catholic Television is now carried on all the major cable carriers in Canada (with the exception of Star Choice). Shaw Cable, that services most of Western Canada, added Salt + Light on their system one year ago. Salt + Light, which has become an important voice in the Canadian Catholic Church and in the public square, is now available in close to two million homes. This year’s donations from the Annual Bishop’s Tea totalled $9,080. The amount in its entirety will be used in support of developing a Mission Statement and 25 Year Long-term Pastoral Plan for the Eparchy of Edmonton. The Ukrainian Catholic Council (Centralia), Eparchy of Edmonton, held its 34 th Eparchial Convention, October 16-18, at which time it elected its new Executive: Ed Kostyshen, President; Patty Zakordonski, Vice-President; Helen Sirman, Secretary; Ed Hladunewich, Treasurer; Christina Mandrusiak, President, Ukrainian Catholic Youth in Canada; Barb Hlus, President, Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada; John Boyko, President, Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada. One year ago, Hieromonk Taras Kraychuk and Deacon Patrick Firman organized a monastic “Skete” in Beaverlodge, Alberta.
