UPCOMING EVENTS

The 2009 Annual Parish Reports (general info, parish census and sacrament statistics) are to be forwarded to the Chancery Office prior to December 31, 2009.

Please find attached the Message by Pope Benedict XVI for the January 1, 2010 celebration of the World Day of Peace, “ If You Want to Cultivate Peace, Protect Creation.”

Parishes and organizations are once again invited to share the joyous news of Our Lord’s Birth with Bishop David with the age-old custom of Christmas Carolling. Please contact the Chancery Office to schedule a time on January 16, 2010 (1:00 pm – 5:00 pm).

The Ukrainian Museum Society of Alberta will hold its annual Concert of the Carols, 2:30 pm, Sunday, January 17, at Saint Josaphat Cathedral. This year’s presentation is hosted by the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton.

Pope John Paul II instituted World Day of the Sick in 1992, setting aside February 11 for its annual celebration. Attached is the text of Pope Benedict XVI Message for this year’s celebration of the World Day of the Sick, “The Church in the Service of Love for the Suffering”.

Each year the Catholic Health Association of Canada produces a resource package to assist parishes in celebrating the World Day of the Sick, including: reflections for reproduction in a newsletter or bulletin, a prayer card, camera-ready artwork; a pamphlet providing a list of suggested activities; and a suggested format for a prayer service/liturgy. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Most Rev. Pedro López Quintana, presently Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, as Apostolic Nuncio to Canada .

His Beatitude Lubomyr issued a Pastoral Message on the Occasion of the Nativity of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. A copy of the message in Ukrainian and English is attached.

In accordance with a decision of the 2010 Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, the year 2010 has been proclaimed as Year of the Christian Vocation – Consecrated Life. Pastors are asked to include the following petition in the celebration of each Divine Liturgy during 2010:

  • “We also pray for those in consecrated life – for the religious, the monastics, and other institutes of consecrated life; for their apostolate and for vocations.”
  • “Ще молимося за спільноти богопосвяченого життя: монастирі, Чини, Згромадження, світські інститути та за їх святе покликання.”

Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) has been a lifeline for those in need throughout the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe for more than 75 years. Founded in 1926 by Pope Pius XI, CNEWA’s mandate is:

  • to support the pastoral mission and institutions of the Eastern Catholic Churches,
  • to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need without regard to nationality or creed,
  • to promote Christian unity and interreligious understanding and collaboration,
  • to educate people in the West about the history, cultures, peoples and churches of the East.
The Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ukraine has been a particular beneficiary of CNEWA’s efforts, receiving some $1.6 US Dollars in the past 10 years alone. Attached is a summary of the projects receiving funding as well as an info letter from Carl Hétu, National Secretary, CNEWA Canada.

Bishop David recently established an Eparchial Liturgical Commission to assist in liturgical celebration and formation within the Eparchy of Edmonton. A copy of the Commission’s mandate, as well as the responsibilities of the Director of Liturgy are attached for your information.
