UPCOMING EVENTS

The 2007 Annual Parish Reports (general info, parish census and sacrament statistics) are to be forwarded to the Chancery Office prior to December 31, 2007.

Parishes and organizations are once again invited to share the joyous news of Our Lord’s Birth with Bishop David with the age-old custom of Christmas Carolling. Please contact the Chancery Office to schedule a time on the following dates: January 20 (2:00 pm – 5:00 pm).

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is observed in Canada between the two Sundays within which January 25 falls. The Week of Prayer seeks to increase unity in the body of Christ by gathering different traditions for prayer and worship together. On the 100th Anniversary of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Edmonton and District Council of Churches invites you to a time of worship and prayer on January 20, 7:00 pm, at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 19010 – 87 Avenue, Edmonton (87 th Avenue just east of Anthony Henday); theme – Pray Without Ceasing. Metropolia Sobor 2008 : The entire hierarchy, clergy, religious and monastics of the Winnipeg Metropolia will assemble May 26-28, 2008 in Edmonton for a unique conference to reflect on the theme of the mission of our Church: “Evangelization Through Catechesis.” Please note that His Beatitude Lubomyr has now confirmed his attendance at the Sobor. Pope Benedict XVI’s Message for the 41st World Day of Peace, which falls on January 1, has as its theme: “The Human Family, a Community of Peace” (Людська спільнота – спільнота миру).

Please find linked a message from Pope Benedict XVI for the World Day for Migrants and Refugees, to be celebrated on January 13, the theme of which is “Young Migrants.”

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Clergy unveiled a web site offering the Bible in nine languages, the Code of Canon Law and commentary on Sunday liturgy: www.bibliaclerus.org (part of its www.clerus.org web site). While the websites are open to everyone, they are geared toward serving the world’s priests, deacons and catechists, the letter said. People accessing the new site will be able to read Scripture along with its interpretation in light of tradition, the teachings of the church and papal commentaries. Biblical texts are available in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, English, Italian, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese.

Linked for your information is a letter sent by CCCB President Archbishop V. James Weisgerber to Prime Minister Stephen Harper regarding capital punishment and a new policy by the Government of Canada not to intervene with other governments when Canadians are facing a sentence of execution.

Proceeds from the eparchy-wide collection in support of the 2008 International Eucharistic Congress, which will take place June 15-22, 2008, Quebec City, amounted to $3,675.00 ($300 St. Vladimir Parish, Edmonton; $437 Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, Mundare; $557 St. Stephen Parish, Calgary; $285 St. Basil Parish, Edmonton; $250 Holy Trinity Parish, Vegreville; $1,250 St. Josaphat Cathedral; $55 St. Olga Parish, Vermilion; $35 Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, Edmonton; $515 St. George Parish, Edmonton). Thank you! These monies have been forwarded to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.
