URBIT ET ORBI Message of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI - Christmas 2009

vatican.va

Dear Brothers and Sisters, how great a gift it is to be part of a communion which is open to everyone! It is the communion of the Most Holy Trinity, from whose heart Emmanuel, Jesus, “God with us”, came into the world. Like the shepherds of Bethlehem, let us contemplate, filled with wonder and gratitude, this mystery of love and light! Happy Christmas to all!

Christmas Greeting from His Beatitude Lubomyr, Major Archbishop of Kyiv and Halych of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church

ugcc.org.ua

On the occasion of this great feast it is my wish that we would truly discern who we are in the eyes of God. We are His beloved children who have been abundantly blessed and who on our part ought to always give thanks to our Creator and Heavenly Father and to the newborn Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. We need to desire a respect for everything that our God bestows upon us.

At this holy time, let us strive to understand that the realization itself of the truth that all that comes from God is good, is already another great gift of our Most Holy, Almighty God. As I end my Christmas greeting, my sincere wish is that you may all have a true awareness of God’s love for us and may your hearts always overflow with gratitude for this great gift!

ugcc.org.ua

Ukrainian famine still brings tears.

edmontonjournal.com

Millions of ethnic Ukrainians starved to death in the Soviet Union in 1932-33. Today, many, including the Canadian and Alberta governments, consider them victims of a Soviet genocide, a deliberate attempt by the Stalin regime to stamp down Ukrainian nationalism by withholding food. Others, including the Russians and some scholars, dispute this characterization. On Saturday scores of members of Edmonton's Ukrainian community gathered to remember the dead.

Most Reverend Bishop David Motiuk asks for support for Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate, Novitiaie in Lviv .

edmontoneparchy.com

Dear Reverend Father:

Recently, Sister Nadia Kotur, ssmi, Provincial Superior, Ukraine, wrote me requesting financial assistance in support of their Novitiate in Ukraine. (Ukrainian version of this request is attached).

More recently, the Eparchy of Edmonton has been blessed with the arrival of two new Sisters from Ukraine – Sr. Emmanuel Kharyshyn, ssmi, and Sr. Tatiana Holovchak, who carry on their community’s apostolate in Canada. Therefore, I am delighted to support Sister Nadia’s request for support for their novitiate, where women will receive their initial formation and preparation by consecrating their lives to the evangelical counsels, following Christ more closely, and dedicating themselves in service to God and the Church. I ask everyone, as a concrete sign of communion with the Church, to offer financial assistance in support of the good work of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate. His Beatitude Patriarch Josyf Slipyj - 25 Years After - Going to His Eternal Reward: 1984 - 2009
edmontoneparchy.com
Every epoch in the history of our Holy Church shows us that the Church renews itself and comes back to life thanks to an eternal power from above—despite all the tragedies, persecutions and all-out attempts to destroy it. This power that saved us from the ruin of a brutal liquidation is God’s Providence—a guarantee that the Holy Spirit continually renews His Church.

Before the events of the Second World War, when everyone knew that Russian imperialism, under cover of communism, would move against Western Europe, the saintly Metropolitan Andrei saw in the person of professor Josyf Slipyj, rector of the Seminary of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in L’viv, a spiritual person of strong character. Bishop's spiritual path took many winding turns - Motiuk calls Catholics to offer others their personal testimonies of faith

In many of our discussions with others, talk never goes deeper than the weather, Motiuk told 130 people at a charismatic prayer breakfast June 13. "We won't talk about our faith."Our world needs nothing more than having Christians follow through on Jesus' command to "go baptize, lead others to faith, evangelize," he said .Motiuk, the spiritual leader of Alberta's 29,000 Ukrainian Catholics, contrasted the personal witness of faith with being a witness to a car crash or a witness to a wedding.

This is extraordinarily important. For we are Christians and our task is to continue the saving action of Jesus Christ. We, as the Church of Christ, are called to evangelize, to bring the whole world the Good News about Christ’s victory over sin and death, by which He released us from the greatest misfortunes, not only to talk about what happened but also to be a visible sign of this, living witnesses. The Papal Message for the Great Fast 2009
vatican.va

"He Fasted for Forty Days and Forty Night, and Afterwards He was Hungry" (Mt 4, 1-2)

Dear brothers and sisters, it is good to see how the ultimate goal of fasting is to help each one of us, as the Servant of God Pope John Paul II wrote, to make the complete gift of self to God (cf. Encyclical Veritatis splendor, 21). May every family and Christian community use well this time of Lent, therefore, in order to cast aside all that distracts the spirit and grow in whatever nourishes the soul, moving it to love of God and neighbor.

ugcc.org.ua
