Близько десяти мільйонів заморених голодом, знищених злою волею держави за пів року, – таким є наслідок Голодомору. 55,5 тисяч смертей на день, 2300 – на годину, майже 40 – щохвилини. Свідомість відмовляється сприймати такі цифри, але вони – реальність. Так діяла влада для того, щоби знищити тих, хто не поділяв її ідеологію, а тих, кого не знищено – залякати. Ще й досі багато свідків Голодомору побоюються давати свідчення або роблять це анонімно. Вони знають правду, але жах перед нелюдським Голодомором примушує їх боятися – навіть через три чверті століття.
Hundreds gather for one-of-a-kind religious ceremony spjournal.com Hundreds of people from near and far gathered at the St. Paul Roman Catholic Cathedral on Nov. 1 to witness a unique religious ceremony - the ordination of a Ukrainian Catholic priest. At 10:30 a.m. last Saturday a chartered bus filled with guests pulled up to the cathedral, dropping off numerous guests who had traveled from Edmonton be part of the ceremony. Not long after, the Premier of Alberta, along with his wife took their place at the front of the church. Seating on the main level of the cathedral was sparse, as family of then Deacon Basil Sych filled the front pews, followed by friends and all others who chose to attend the trilingual event. During the tradition-filled ceremony and just before the ordination of the deacon, Most Reverand David Motiuk, the bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton, took time to speak to the congregation. "Deacon Basil Mark, you are now called to know your sheep," said Motiuk. He described the deacon as a shepherd who will lead his flock. "Know your flock well. Love them and they will follow you," said the bishop. He told the deacon that he has now committed his "life to the good shepherd. Trust Him in the good and bad times," later adding, "Like Christ, you and your family . . . are also called to a life of sacrifice."
A long day’s journey into light wcr.ab.ca Deacon Basil Sych has always been on the outside looking in. He was a Ukrainian Catholic from Alberta living in French Quebec. He was a non-native person working in ministry in aboriginal communities. As a boy growing up on a farm near Hay Lakes, he attended Divine Liturgies that were two to three hours long in Old Slavonic. “I didn’t understand a thing.” He has a wide array of work experience – from working in a funeral home to doing structural repair on airplanes to researching native treaty claims. Even in those jobs, he was looking for something more. “Everything I was doing as work was my second choice. Where I always wanted to be was as a priest.” It’s a yearning that will come to fruition Nov. 1 when Bishop David Motiuk will ordain the 42-year-old Sych a priest in St. Paul.

Head of the UGCC prays for the successful conduct of this year’s Synod ugcc.org.ua On September 2 - 9 a meeting of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church will be held in Lviv. The main theme of the Synod will be the question of evangelization. “What does evangelization mean?” In a commentary for the Department of Information of the UGCC His Beatitude Lubomyr asked this question. “This means passing on the Good News brought by Jesus Christ, that man without regard to his own infirmity, by God’s mercy and grace, can be saved. Each of us is a sinner and needs divine help. It is a great joy for us that it is possible to leave a sinful status and become a child of God. Each one who has already learned this Good News should become stronger in it and tell it to those who, for certain reasons, have not yet heard it. CNEWA Canada Launches Ukrainian Relief Fund cnewacanada.ca CNEWA Canada has launched an emergency appeal to aid families in western Ukraine displaced by what is called the worst flooding in a century. Of the more than 100,000 people affected, 20,000 were evacuated from their homes. Thus far, 22 people have died from floods caused by four days of rain in late July. Damages include houses, churches, schools, roads and an estimated 360 bridges; 81,510 acres of agricultural land were devastated, wiping out thousands of crops. CNEWA’s partner in Ukraine, Caritas Ukraine, has surveyed the affected areas and has opened relief centers in the regions of Chernivci, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Ternopil. Caritas reports an urgent need for drinking water, powdered milk, baby food, blankets, canned food, soap, detergents and medicine. “I invite the people of Canada, especially my fellow Ukrainian-Canadians, to support CNEWA Canada’s efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to flood victims who live in the poorest region of Ukraine,” said the Most Rev. Lawrence Huculak, O.S.B.M., Ukrainian Greek Catholic Metropolitan of Winnipeg and a member of CNEWA Canada’s Board of Directors.

P.S. Світового дня молоді в Австралії ugcc.org.ua У вівторок цього тижня Преосвященний Владика Діонісій (Ляхович), Куріальний єпископ, повернувся із Австралії. Там він із групою сорока молодих людей з України брав участь у Світовому дні молоді. Подорож була розділена на два етапи. Перший – українська делегація брала участь у днях єпархії УГКЦ у Мельбурні. Велика Літургія відбулася на стадіоні. У свято Святих Верховних апостолів Петра і Павла, ім‘я яких носить єпархія, був великий відпуст. Під час Літургії Владика Діонісій виголосив проповідь. Найперше передав вітання від Блаженнішого Любомира для Владики Петра та цілої єпархії. Відтак зосередив увагу присутніх на темі гасла світового дня молоді: «Ви приймете силу Святого Духа і станете моїми свідками». В чому полягає ця сила Святого Духа, сила Божа? І відповідь: у любові. "Отець є праджерелом всієї любові і доброти. Ця любов об'являється в Ісусі Христі і цією любов'ю він зціляє недужих, бісів виганяє, мертвих воскрешає. Христос сповнив свою місію на землі, і вознісся на небо. Святий Дух продовжує в Церкві та в особах цю силу любові, яка походить від Отця, і діє в Ісусі Христі, а тепер сходить на Церкву. Святий Дух дає життя, харизми, запалює проповідників. Ми можемо пізнати Його дію по ділах, де проявляється любов, радість, мир, доброта, ласкавість, довготерпіння. Треба нам відкритися на діяння Святого Духа, відкрити місце для Нього в нашому серці. Тому треба скористати з цих днів Божої благодаті", – відзначив проповідник. Відзначив Владика спів місцевого хору, адже спеціально до цих днів на ноти покладено оригінальну, молодіжну Літургію.
Вірні УГКЦ вирушили на Світовий день молоді в Австралії ugcc.org.ua 5 липня з аеропорту "Бориспіль" до Австралії для участі у Світовому дні молоді відлетіла основна група (частина відлетіла вчора) делегації УГКЦ. Її очолює Владика Діонісій (Ляхович), Куріальний єпископ. XXIII Світовий день молоді (World Youth Day) відбудеться 15-20 липня у Сіднеї. Організатори форуму очікують близько 500 000 хлопців і дівчат, з яких не менше 200 000 прилетять на зелений континент з-за кордону. Серед головних подій, які заплановані для української делегації, це триденна катехизація, яка послужить спеціальним приготуванням до відкриття Світового дня молоді та до спільної молитви зі Святішим Отцем Венедиктом XVI. Для усіх україномовних делегатів катехизацію очолять Владики УГКЦ Діонісій (Ляхович), Петро (Стасюк), Єпарх для українців-католиків в Австралії, Новій Зеландії та Океанії, та Давид (Мотюк), Єпарх Едмонтонський. Напередодні, з 10 до 14 липня, у Мельбурні делегація УГКЦ буде учасником днів єпархії для українців-католиків в Австралії.

Mundare museum celebrates 50 years wcr.ab.ca An anniversary is a unique and significant event, whether it occurs in the life of a person or in the life of an organization. "Over the hill," they say, when it comes to half a century in the life of a person, but half a century in the life of an organization seems to be still going uphill. The latter sentiment certainly applies to the Ukrainian Basilian Fathers Museum in Mundare - one of few museums in Alberta that can boast 50 years of existence - which celebrated the climax to its golden jubilee on May 25. Dignitaries present included Archbishop Lawrence Huculak, head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Canada; Bishop Paul Chomnycky of New York and Premier Ed Stelmach.
Byzantine liturgy shows Catholic diversity wcr.ab.ca The diversity of the Catholic Church was on display with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy June 18 at the International Eucharistic Congress. Archbishop Lawrence Huculak of Winnipeg, the metropolitan of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada, celebrated the two-hour Byzantine liturgy inside a packed hockey arena adjacent to the Expo Cite grounds that was transformed into a "eucharistic city" for the June 15-22 congress.

Ukrainian Catholics urged to take up call to evangelize wcr.ab.ca Ukrainian Catholics are taking seriously their duty to pass the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world. Some 150 bishops, priests, deacons and religious men and women from across Canada gathered at the Chateau Louis Conference Centre May 26-28 to discuss how to evangelize through catechesis. “The Church has a duty to hand on to others what we ourselves believe—the Word of God, the teaching of God,” Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church worldwide told participants May 26. And he said education through catechesis must begin at home. “We have to speak to those who are in the parish already to make sure that those who are our parishioners really fully know what they believe,” he said.

Своєю смертю на хресті Ісус Христос остаточно подолав смерть і звільнив нас від страху перед нею. Ми, що з Божої благодаті вже віримо в Христове воскресіння, віримо також, що через святу тайну Хрещення ми за дією Святого Духа втілені в Ісуса Христа, як каже апостол Павло у листі до Римлян: “Ми поховані з ним через хрещення на смерть, щоб, як Христос воскрес із мертвих славою Отця, і ми теж жили новим життям” (Рим. 6, 4-5).

God sows his love with wild abandon wcr.ab.ca Unlike farmers, God sows his love, mercy and forgiveness in almost a carefree, even wasteful way, says Ukrainian Catholic Bishop David Motiuk. And those who have experienced this excess of God's love must share it with others. Motiuk, the bishop of the Edmonton Ukrainian Eparchy, is a farmer's son and speaks from experience. "If you grew up on a farm or planted a garden, you know that we (farmers) do things rather painstakingly," he said March 8. "We don't just throw out the seeds to the wind and offer a prayer and hope for the best. We prepare the soil and we plant the crops, taking care to plant each seed just so - not too much, not too little, not too deep, not too shallow. (But) our ways are not the ways of the Lord and the Lord's ways are not our ways," the bishop said. "The Lord's ways are filled with overabundance. He sows his love, mercy and forgiveness in almost a carefree, even wasteful way."

A pleasant moment of the day was a greeting from the president of Ukraine, which was brought by Mr. Yurii Bogutskyy, Deputy Head of the Secretariat of the President of Ukraine. Mr. Bogutskyy reported that for his prominent personal contribution to the spiritual revival of the Ukrainian nation, his long-term ecclesiastical activity, and on the occasion of his 75th birthday anniversary, Viktor Yushchenko has honored His Beatitude with the order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 3rd degree.

Любомир Гузар: Я був щасливим... umoloda.kiev.ua Блаженнійший Любомир кардинал Гузар — нерідкий гість на сторінках «України молодої». Ми говорили з ним про багато речей, особливо пам’ятною для авторки цих рядків була зустріч після Помаранчевої революції — надії тоді було стільки, що нею, намастивши хліб свій щоденний, цілком можна було жити. Зараз ти все частіше сумніваєшся у своєму ремеслі — хоч пиши, хоч не пиши, а твоє місто (для прикладу) розвалять і без твоїх протестів. Ця розмова про професію — журналістську та душпастирську — продовжується й поза диктофоном, витікаючи з ключового питання, чи не шкодує наш співрозмовник про обраний ним життєвий шлях. Треба вірити, треба не впадати у відчай, говорить кардинал Гузар, який святкує сьогодні своє 75–річчя (а ще у цьому році — піввіковий ювілей його священицької місії). Мабуть, той, хто сіє печаль, печаль і пожне. Хоча сказано й таке, що блаженні засмучені, бо вони будуть утішені. Шкода лише, що не в цьому житті.

Because He is the key person in our life. There is no one more important than Jesus Christ who came to earth in order to tell us about God, God the Father, about this loving Father who created us, who presents us with His gifts, His graces. This is the most important.

Nov. 22 marked the 75th anniversary of the tragedy, which saw Soviet leader Joseph Stalin's communist regime confiscate food and farming supplies - even seeds - in an attempt to quash Ukrainian nationalism. It wasn't until earlier this year that Canada formally recognized the famine as a genocide. Alberta's Bill 37 followed in October.

Later in his Sunday audience the Pontiff recognized a group of pilgrims from Ukraine who had joined the crowd in St. Peter's Square. He took note of the commemorations marking the 75th anniversary of the Ukrainian famine, brought about in the early 1930s by Soviet policies. The Pope promised his prayers for the victims, saying that it was his "fervent hope that no political system may ever again, in the name of an ideology, deny human beings their rights, freedom, and dignity."

Як і щороку, в останні тижні листопада ми з великою скорботою згадуємо жертви найбільшої трагедії в історії українського народу – Голодомору 1932-33 рр. Близько десяти мільйонів заморених голодом, знищених злою волею держави за пів року, – таким є наслідок Голодомору. 55,5 тисяч смертей на день, 2300 – на годину, майже 40 – щохвилини. Свідомість відмовляється сприймати такі цифри, але вони – реальність. Так діяла влада для того, щоби знищити тих, хто не поділяв її ідеологію, а тих, кого не знищено – залякати. Ще й досі багато свідків Голодомору побоюються давати свідчення або роблять це анонімно. Вони знають правду, але жах перед нелюдським Голодомором примушує їх боятися – навіть через три чверті століття.

Hundreds gather for one-of-a-kind religious ceremony

Hundreds of people from near and far gathered at the St. Paul Roman Catholic Cathedral on Nov. 1 to witness a unique religious ceremony - the ordination of a Ukrainian Catholic priest. At 10:30 a.m. last Saturday a chartered bus filled with guests pulled up to the cathedral, dropping off numerous guests who had traveled from Edmonton be part of the ceremony. Not long after, the Premier of Alberta, along with his wife took their place at the front of the church. Seating on the main level of the cathedral was sparse, as family of then Deacon Basil Sych filled the front pews, followed by friends and all others who chose to attend the trilingual event.

During the tradition-filled ceremony and just before the ordination of the deacon, Most Reverand David Motiuk, the bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton, took time to speak to the congregation. "Deacon Basil Mark, you are now called to know your sheep," said Motiuk. He described the deacon as a shepherd who will lead his flock. "Know your flock well. Love them and they will follow you," said the bishop. He told the deacon that he has now committed his "life to the good shepherd. Trust Him in the good and bad times," later adding, "Like Christ, you and your family . . . are also called to a life of sacrifice."

Deacon Basil Sych has always been on the outside looking in. He was a Ukrainian Catholic from Alberta living in French Quebec. He was a non-native person working in ministry in aboriginal communities. As a boy growing up on a farm near Hay Lakes, he attended Divine Liturgies that were two to three hours long in Old Slavonic. “I didn’t understand a thing.” He has a wide array of work experience – from working in a funeral home to doing structural repair on airplanes to researching native treaty claims. Even in those jobs, he was looking for something more. “Everything I was doing as work was my second choice. Where I always wanted to be was as a priest.” It’s a yearning that will come to fruition Nov. 1 when Bishop David Motiuk will ordain the 42-year-old Sych a priest in St. Paul.

Head of the UGCC prays for the successful conduct of this year’s Synod

On September 2 - 9 a meeting of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church will be held in Lviv. The main theme of the Synod will be the question of evangelization. “What does evangelization mean?” In a commentary for the Department of Information of the UGCC His Beatitude Lubomyr asked this question. “This means passing on the Good News brought by Jesus Christ, that man without regard to his own infirmity, by God’s mercy and grace, can be saved. Each of us is a sinner and needs divine help. It is a great joy for us that it is possible to leave a sinful status and become a child of God. Each one who has already learned this Good News should become stronger in it and tell it to those who, for certain reasons, have not yet heard it. This is evangelization,” the Head of the UGCC explained.

CNEWA Canada Launches Ukrainian Relief Fund

CNEWA Canada has launched an emergency appeal to aid families in western Ukraine displaced by what is called the worst flooding in a century. Of the more than 100,000 people affected, 20,000 were evacuated from their homes. Thus far, 22 people have died from floods caused by four days of rain in late July. Damages include houses, churches, schools, roads and an estimated 360 bridges; 81,510 acres of agricultural land were devastated, wiping out thousands of crops. CNEWA’s partner in Ukraine, Caritas Ukraine, has surveyed the affected areas and has opened relief centers in the regions of Chernivci, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Ternopil. Caritas reports an urgent need for drinking water, powdered milk, baby food, blankets, canned food, soap, detergents and medicine. “I invite the people of Canada, especially my fellow Ukrainian-Canadians, to support CNEWA Canada’s efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to flood victims who live in the poorest region of Ukraine,” said the Most Rev. Lawrence Huculak, O.S.B.M., Ukrainian Greek Catholic Metropolitan of Winnipeg and a member of CNEWA Canada’s Board of Directors.

У вівторок цього тижня Преосвященний Владика Діонісій (Ляхович), Куріальний єпископ, повернувся із Австралії. Там він із групою сорока молодих людей з України брав участь у Світовому дні молоді. Подорож була розділена на два етапи. Перший – українська делегація брала участь у днях єпархії УГКЦ у Мельбурні. Велика Літургія відбулася на стадіоні. У свято Святих Верховних апостолів Петра і Павла, ім‘я яких носить єпархія, був великий відпуст. Під час Літургії Владика Діонісій виголосив проповідь. Найперше передав вітання від Блаженнішого Любомира для Владики Петра та цілої єпархії. Відтак зосередив увагу присутніх на темі гасла світового дня молоді: «Ви приймете силу Святого Духа і станете моїми свідками». В чому полягає ця сила Святого Духа, сила Божа? І відповідь: у любові. "Отець є праджерелом всієї любові і доброти. Ця любов об'являється в Ісусі Христі і цією любов'ю він зціляє недужих, бісів виганяє, мертвих воскрешає. Христос сповнив свою місію на землі, і вознісся на небо. Святий Дух продовжує в Церкві та в особах цю силу любові, яка походить від Отця, і діє в Ісусі Христі, а тепер сходить на Церкву. Святий Дух дає життя, харизми, запалює проповідників. Ми можемо пізнати Його дію по ділах, де проявляється любов, радість, мир, доброта, ласкавість, довготерпіння. Треба нам відкритися на діяння Святого Духа, відкрити місце для Нього в нашому серці. Тому треба скористати з цих днів Божої благодаті", – відзначив проповідник. Відзначив Владика спів місцевого хору, адже спеціально до цих днів на ноти покладено оригінальну, молодіжну Літургію.

Вірні УГКЦ вирушили на Світовий день молоді в Австралії

5 липня з аеропорту "Бориспіль" до Австралії для участі у Світовому дні молоді відлетіла основна група (частина відлетіла вчора) делегації УГКЦ. Її очолює Владика Діонісій (Ляхович), Куріальний єпископ. XXIII Світовий день молоді (World Youth Day) відбудеться 15-20 липня у Сіднеї. Організатори форуму очікують близько 500 000 хлопців і дівчат, з яких не менше 200 000 прилетять на зелений континент з-за кордону. Серед головних подій, які заплановані для української делегації, це триденна катехизація, яка послужить спеціальним приготуванням до відкриття Світового дня молоді та до спільної молитви зі Святішим Отцем Венедиктом XVI. Для усіх україномовних делегатів катехизацію очолять Владики УГКЦ Діонісій (Ляхович), Петро (Стасюк), Єпарх для українців-католиків в Австралії, Новій Зеландії та Океанії, та Давид (Мотюк), Єпарх Едмонтонський. Напередодні, з 10 до 14 липня, у Мельбурні делегація УГКЦ буде учасником днів єпархії для українців-католиків в Австралії.

Mundare museum celebrates 50 years

An anniversary is a unique and significant event, whether it occurs in the life of a person or in the life of an organization. "Over the hill," they say, when it comes to half a century in the life of a person, but half a century in the life of an organization seems to be still going uphill. The latter sentiment certainly applies to the Ukrainian Basilian Fathers Museum in Mundare - one of few museums in Alberta that can boast 50 years of existence - which celebrated the climax to its golden jubilee on May 25. Dignitaries present included Archbishop Lawrence Huculak, head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Canada; Bishop Paul Chomnycky of New York and Premier Ed Stelmach.

The diversity of the Catholic Church was on display with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy June 18 at the International Eucharistic Congress. Archbishop Lawrence Huculak of Winnipeg, the metropolitan of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada, celebrated the two-hour Byzantine liturgy inside a packed hockey arena adjacent to the Expo Cite grounds that was transformed into a "eucharistic city" for the June 15-22 congress.

Even the celebration of Mass is at times made into a point of division, the Byzantine-rite archbishop of Winnipeg lamented during his homily at the International Eucharistic Congress. Archbishop Lawrence Huculak of Winnipeg for Ukrainian Catholics gave the homily at the celebration of the Divine Liturgy today in Quebec. The Eucharistic Congress is under way in Canada through Sunday.

Sunday, June 29, has been set aside as Awareness Sunday throughout the Eparchy of Edmonton to make the work of Catholic Missions In Canada better known. “This year, Catholic Missions In Canada is celebrating its 100th Anniversary of service to missions and missionaries throughout Canada, which includes assisting Ukrainian Catholics in need,” this was announced by Most Rev. David Motiuk, Eparchial Bishop of Edmonton and newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Catholic Missions In Canada. The June 29th date was specially chosen as it coincides with the Feast of the Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles who, as great missionaries, spread the Gospel message to the far ends of the world, said the bishop.

Ukrainian Catholics urged to take up call to evangelize

Ukrainian Catholics are taking seriously their duty to pass the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world. Some 150 bishops, priests, deacons and religious men and women from across Canada gathered at the Chateau Louis Conference Centre May 26-28 to discuss how to evangelize through catechesis. “The Church has a duty to hand on to others what we ourselves believe—the Word of God, the teaching of God,” Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church worldwide told participants May 26. And he said education through catechesis must begin at home. “We have to speak to those who are in the parish already to make sure that those who are our parishioners really fully know what they believe,” he said.

Edmonton's two Catholic bishops are asking local Catholics to consider the faith implications of an upcoming exhibit that features preserved human bodies. Archbishop Richard Smith of the Edmonton Archdiocese and Bishop David Motiuk of the Edmonton Ukrainian Eparchy have issued a joint pastoral statement in advance of the exhibit's opening at the Telus World of Science.

The Body Worlds exhibit will open in Edmonton in just over two weeks, and its promoters promise the bodies and body parts on display will give visitors a "one-of-a-kind anatomy and physiology lesson." But some critics are asking visitors to consider the display as something more than a mere educational tool. In a joint statement released Monday, leaders of Edmonton's Catholic communities urged parishioners to consider "the faith implications" involved in Body Worlds, which is scheduled to open June 13 at the Telus World of Science.

On May 13, 2008, on the official website of the UGCC the message to youth "On the road to Emmaus" was posted. It was prepared by the Synodal Commission on Youth Matters of the UGCC. This document was written by Bishops David (Motiuk), Eparch of Edmonton, and Yaroslav (Pryriz), Auxiliary Bishop of the Sambir and Drohobych Eparchy. The message was written in the spirit of the work and decisions of the 4th session of the Patriarchal Sobor [Council], "Youth in the Church of third millennium," which was held in Pushcha-Vodytsya near Kyiv from August 13 to 17, 2007, and the addresses of the Head of the Church, His Beatitude Lubomyr, to senior members of the UGCC and to youth, which were promulgated on December 31, 2007. In this text the members of the Synodal Commission on Youth Matters offer young people pastoral advice: "walk confidently on the way to real happiness offered by the Church of Christ."

Великдень – це найбільше свято в цілому році, і не дивно, бо в ньому перестає для нас бути грізною і страшною смерть – те, що заперечує все життя. Своєю смертю на хресті Ісус Христос остаточно подолав смерть і звільнив нас від страху перед нею. Ми, що з Божої благодаті вже віримо в Христове воскресіння, віримо також, що через святу тайну Хрещення ми за дією Святого Духа втілені в Ісуса Христа, як каже апостол Павло у листі до Римлян: “Ми поховані з ним через хрещення на смерть, щоб, як Христос воскрес із мертвих славою Отця, і ми теж жили новим життям” (Рим. 6, 4-5).

Unlike farmers, God sows his love, mercy and forgiveness in almost a carefree, even wasteful way, says Ukrainian Catholic Bishop David Motiuk. And those who have experienced this excess of God's love must share it with others. Motiuk, the bishop of the Edmonton Ukrainian Eparchy, is a farmer's son and speaks from experience. "If you grew up on a farm or planted a garden, you know that we (farmers) do things rather painstakingly," he said March 8. "We don't just throw out the seeds to the wind and offer a prayer and hope for the best. We prepare the soil and we plant the crops, taking care to plant each seed just so - not too much, not too little, not too deep, not too shallow. (But) our ways are not the ways of the Lord and the Lord's ways are not our ways," the bishop said. "The Lord's ways are filled with overabundance. He sows his love, mercy and forgiveness in almost a carefree, even wasteful way."

On February 26, 2008, the Head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, His Beatitude Lubomyr, turned 75. A pleasant moment of the day was a greeting from the president of Ukraine, which was brought by Mr. Yurii Bogutskyy, Deputy Head of the Secretariat of the President of Ukraine. Mr. Bogutskyy reported that for his prominent personal contribution to the spiritual revival of the Ukrainian nation, his long-term ecclesiastical activity, and on the occasion of his 75th birthday anniversary, Viktor Yushchenko has honored His Beatitude with the order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 3rd degree.

Юрій Богуцький, заступник Глави Секретаріату Президента України. Пан Юрій повідомив, що за визначний особистий внесок у духовне відродження українського народу, багатолітню церковну діяльність та з нагоди 75-річчя від дня народження Віктор Ющенко нагородив Блаженнішого Любомира орденом князя Ярослава Мудрого III ступеня.

Блаженнійший Любомир кардинал Гузар — нерідкий гість на сторінках «України молодої». Ми говорили з ним про багато речей, особливо пам’ятною для авторки цих рядків була зустріч після Помаранчевої революції — надії тоді було стільки, що нею, намастивши хліб свій щоденний, цілком можна було жити. Зараз ти все частіше сумніваєшся у своєму ремеслі — хоч пиши, хоч не пиши, а твоє місто (для прикладу) розвалять і без твоїх протестів. Ця розмова про професію — журналістську та душпастирську — продовжується й поза диктофоном, витікаючи з ключового питання, чи не шкодує наш співрозмовник про обраний ним життєвий шлях. Треба вірити, треба не впадати у відчай, говорить кардинал Гузар, який святкує сьогодні своє 75–річчя (а ще у цьому році — піввіковий ювілей його священицької місії). Мабуть, той, хто сіє печаль, печаль і пожне. Хоча сказано й таке, що блаженні засмучені, бо вони будуть утішені. Шкода лише, що не в цьому житті.

The most important in those days is that to which the Church invites us. More precisely: to give due glory to Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God who comes to us human beings. To give Him glory and at the same time to consider what His coming means for us. Because He is the key person in our life. There is no one more important than Jesus Christ who came to earth in order to tell us about God, God the Father, about this loving Father who created us, who presents us with His gifts, His graces. This is the most important.
