“Five years ago in Kyiv Pope John Paul II addressed the politicians saying ‘Your task is to serve the people, securing peace and equal rights for all. Resist the temptation to use power for personal or group interests.‘ Today we can see in a special way that these words have not ceased to be timely,” His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar, Major Archbishop of Kyiv and Halych of the UGCC, stated this at a press conference at the Independent Ukrainian News Agency UNIAN. This was one of the reasons why the celebration of the 5th anniversary of the visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II to Ukraine will be held on June 23 and 25 in Kyiv. The Head of the UGCC explained: “We would like to remember the words said by this outstanding person, the most recognized moral authority, to politicians, artists, youth, representatives of the Churches. We would like to seek solutions for our political, social and church problems in them.”

”Writing the catechism of the UGCC is a great task from the perspective of the Universal Church. We must show the faithful of our Church who they are in the borders of the whole Church, according to the tradition in which they live. Our work will also be useful for the Universal Church, for if some one wants to see what contribution the Eastern lung makes in cognition of God’s truth he or she can make use of the catechism you are working at now,” His Beatitude Lubomyr, Major Archbishop of Kyiv and Halych, told the participants of the conference dedicated to writing the Catechism of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Then, when answering the questions of the participants, His Beatitude was asked about the possibility of using sayings and teachings of the Orthodox Church in the text of the Catechism. Answering that, His Beatitude stated: “We should be open enough. Sanctity is a gift of God, so it cannot be limited denominationally. Still, on the other hand, we should not interpret sanctity as the position of some individuals. We should consider not so much our legal affiliation, but our Christian feelings. It should be visible that a true friend of this or that person was God.”

Unity is a Gift of God

“Today, both church leaders and state leaders often use the word ‘unity.' They refer to it, they exalt it, but this unity is so rarely seen in our lives,” His Beatitude Lubomyr, Major Archbishop of Kyiv and Halych, stated in his sermon at the Divine Liturgy on the feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles, in the Cathedral of Christ's Resurrection in Kyiv.

“There were people who advised to organize protests against this movie,” His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar, Major Archbishop of Kyiv and Halych, stated at a press conference in Lviv on June 6. “We do not object if there is someone who wants to act this way. But we are concerned that the condemnation will serve the opposite goal. Instead of helping people to understand that it is no good, interest is created...

With these words from the troparion, we today call on the souls of those who took upon their shoulders the burden of the great spiritual feat of preserving the faith and rescuing the Church 60 years ago, at a time when the very foundations of human civilization were shaken. It was a time when evil seemingly became all-powerful and persistently tore out the map of the world in its effort to become the master of human history. It took an especially acute spiritual sight to be able to see all the vanity of these efforts...
