УКРАЇНСЬКА КАТОЛИЦЬКА ЕДМОНТОНСЬКА ЄПАРХІЯ

UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC EPARCHY OF EDMONTON

PARISHIONER'S RESPONSES

TO THE

EPARCHIAL MISSION STATEMENT

September 27, 2009

We are delighted to hear about the development of a long-term pastoral plan for the Eparchy of Edmonton and appreciate your invitation to participate in the process by providing comments on the draft Mission Statement, the supporting scripture passage, Divine Liturgy phrase, icon and logo.

We like the draft Mission Statement as it is currently written.

We prefer the supporting scripture passage from John 8:12 " I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life”

We strongly prefer the Divine Liturgy phrase “Shout to the Lord, all the earth; sing now to his name, give glory to His praise.”

We strongly prefer the logo Trinity – Faithful gathered in the shape of a heart around the Cross. We do not like the other logos at all.

We would prefer to see another icon other than the choices currently offered.  We like Christ the Pantocrator (Christ and the Bible).  We think this icon best sums up everything else.

Thank you for your consideration of our input.

Yours in Christ,

Parishioners at St. Basil the Great Parish, Edmonton, Alberta

Our Parish Pastoral Council of St. Nicholas discussed the Eparchial Mission Statement. They thought it was good.

The Scripture passages they liked were (2 of them) John 10: 16 and John 8: 12.

The Divine Liturgy phrase they liked was: "Let us love one another, so that with one mind we may profess."

The Icon they decided upon was that of Christ the Good Shepherd.

The logo they chose was the one of the Trinity - Faithful gathered in the shape of a heart around the Cross.

Thanks

#1 Mission Statement

Your mission statement is amazing, powerful, and really does take into account the different petitions of the Sobor from 2008! Congratulations on bringing it all together!

#2 Supporting Scripture Passage

Out of your choices, John 14:6 and John 8:12 would fit accordingly.

Unfortunately neither of the other two about the sower or the other sheep really go with the mission statement as the mission statement is already unified and stating that we come in God's power.

I would like to add one other choice if possible because Jesus gave this image of His life's work to us as a guide for His mission and ours when He read in the synagogue: Luke 14:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”

#3 Supporting Divine Liturgy Phrase

Either "Grant also O God" or "We have seen the true light" are acceptable.

"Grant also" is very humble and God will only bless you, "We have seen the true light" is right after receiving the Eucharist.

Unfortunately "Shout to the Lord, all the earth, Sing now to His name" when read during a recited liturgy, it's like everyone responding is in a coma. No one is shouting or singing, it's just monotone and does not do the prayer justice. I wish this were not the case and I wish it was proclaimed as powerfully as it sounds, but the reality of it when heard is rote repetition, there is no power or belief in the words sadly.

#4 Supporting Icon

Oranta of the Mother of God

Has Jesus as well as the Theotokos giving veneration to Mary that extends her arms to all of us in prayer helping us. It is also Byzantine in the tradition of our Eastern Catholic faith. Hands down the most awesome Icon on your list.

The only other alternative would be Christ's Descent into Hell, or the Anastasis, the Byzantine Resurrection.

#5 Logos

Sorry my friends in Christ, but another logo, please please please pray about this and go back to the drawing board.

How about something with a byzantine eastern catholic feel? The ones that you have are well done by being cut and dry, but seem very sterile and western roman catholic.

Thank you for your wonderful job, you have done some amazing work to bring this all together and glorify God, and may the Holy Spirit bless all of you in your future meetings for the Eparchy!

Sincerely from a friend and fellow servant in Icyc Xpuctoc,

The draft mission statement is very powerful and extremely well written.  I have one suggestion for you and the faithful to consider and that is where it says "...reaching out with love and proclaiming the good news to all the people for the glory of God."

Just a suggestion.

When parish council met on Oct.5, council members were asked to participate in a discussion of the Bishop's request for feedback on the proposed mission statement.  Rather than enter into a discussion, which some members felt would take months to properly consider, council agreed to provide individual survey feedback with tabulation of the results to reflect its opinion.

Having a Mission Statement helps to define our Christian goals and guide the actions of the Eparchy on a path that would please the Lord.

Looking ahead and attempting to guess what the future may bring is a daunting and perhaps impossible challenge.  We may have our sights on an ultimate goal and hope that our choice of actions will lead us there.

Underlying a mission statement are our BELIEFS,  VALUES  AND GOALS.  As I think about this issue the following are thoughts that I am sure most people involved in this project have dealt with in some fashion.

Belief Statements:

I Believe:

--that God exists,

--that His Spirit is always present among us,

--that He has promised us salvation,

--that He has promised us abundance on earth,

--that He has come to earth to SERVE us through his Word and His Son,

--that by believing and living the Word through Jesus we will find salvation.

--that the writings in the Bible were inspired by God,

--that the Holy Bible is our source and our guiding light,

--that our bodies are the temple of the Lord,

--that God works through each of us,

--that the Lord loves us always and forever.

Value Statemens:

I value:

--the teachings of the Saints

--the guidance of the Catholic Church

--the Church (people)

--the ordained ministry and all serving the church

--church community

--the symbols of our church, and of our rite

Goals:

Ultimate Goal:  To live forever with our Lord.

Short term goals:

--To live the Word of God.

In so doing, we would create peace and harmony.   We would achieve God's promise of abundance on earth.  We would create a fertile ground on which the seeds of vocations would flourish.  We would  each help to strengthen our faith.  The Church within our Rite would strengthen and grow.

--to provide opportunities to grow in our understanding of  Scripture,

--to support our clergy,

--to show compassion and support of our parishioners

--to reach out to people in need outside---- our parish--our city--our province--our country

--to encourage and invite people to celebrate and worship along with us

--to welcome and include all to join our faith , (others come to mind)

The draft mission statement that was thought out and written is indeed inspired.  A wonderful job done to lead us on our Christian future.

The leading portion of the mission statement directing us to live the word of God with joy and zeal is in keeping with the concensus as outlined in the Pastoral Plan of the Vocations Congress held in Montreal in 2004.  Among many other marvelous benefits, the object is to create a fertile ground on which the seeds of vocations may grow and flourish.  Wonderful!

I do have a small amendment to the mission statement for consideration.

The life of our Church and our rite depends largely on membership.  As we travelled through several parts of Europe this year, we came upon many, large and magnificent churches. Sadly, many of the churches were no more than a monument or museum rather than a building housing a living, active, thriving Christian community. Congregations give life to the buildings. Membership in churches in our Eparchy is absolutely vital.   Out reach programs - charitable, educational, spiritual -- are important means of bringing people to worship in our beautiful churches and give reason for attendance.  The mission statement should clearly emphasize our intention of reaching out to others in an inclusive  manner.

Based on the book of St. James, "faith without action is dead."  Service to others is a way of witnessing our faith.  Service to others is a way of encouraging others to join with us and possibly becoming active members of our church community. Allowing for all parishioners, young and old, to be involved in service to others, provides a opportunity for growth in personal spirituality.

Consider:

reaching out to all people in service with love and in proclaiming His word  - “reaching out to all people” implies inclusive, charitable, spititual, physical, and financial help to groups or individuals within and outside a parish.   The word “service” implies an overt action that definitely goes beyond mere “lip service” and would be in keeping with the readings from the book of St. James.

Major ideas imbedded in this mission statement: VOCATION CULTURE--OUT REACH --SERVICE--EVANGELIZATION

"The faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton are called to joyfully lead the life taught by the Risen Christ, reaching out to all people, in serving with love and in proclaiming His word,  for the glory of God."

The image of Christ knocking at a door and reaching out to serve others, reflects well on the mission statement.

Statement: The faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton are called to joyfully lead the life of a new creature of God, transformed and incorporated into the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus by Baptism of water and Spirit, reaching out with love and proclaiming His word to all people for the glory of God.

Scripture Passage: "This is eternal life, that they know You the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom You have sent." (Jn. 17: 3)

Divine Liturgy Phrase: "Grant us in this present life the knowledge of Your truth, and in the age to come, bestow eternal life."

We the faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton are called to joyfully lead the life taught by the Risen Christ, reaching out with love and proclaiming His word to all people for the glory of God.

GOD, THE FATHER, KEEPS HIS PROMISE: Salvation History started with God's Covenant of love with Abraham and his descendants. They were called to fidelity and trust to his enduring promise, his covenant (Dt. 10: 14-21). "God is treating you as sons..... he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holines" (Heb.12: 7-10). God then gave us his Son, Jesus Christ as the new and everlasting Covenant. Jesus endured the cross and then resurrected. This Conventual relationship in Christ promises his presence, his protection, his forgiveness and guidance through the sacraments, commandments and beatitudes. As Christians we now take up the call to fidelity and trust and to strive for holiness.

Mary, the Blessed Virgin shines forth as the Theotokos....the Mother par excellent Her "Fiat" brought the whole world the Savior. Our Lady of Perpetual Help will always be faithful to our cry for help and spiritual growth.

The new covenant is concealed in the old while the old is revealed in the new.

Thus we are Christians with a beautiful past. Let us thank God for his faithfulness.

VALUES: As the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Edmonton, the Church will endeavor to:

  • to shepherd her flock: "I am the good shepherd" (John 10:11);
  • practice good stewardship: "good and well done faithful servant" (Matt 25:21);
  • pursue social justice: "justice gives lasting security" (Is. 32:17);
  • is compassionate: "endures whatever comes" (1 Cor. 13:7);
  • shows respect: "Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is necessary" (Pope Benedict XVI);
  • collaborating: "in union with Christ, we form one body" (Rom. 12:5);
  • work for peace: "grow strong in the Lord, with the strength of his power" (Eph. 6:10);
  • pray: "I am standing at the door knocking " (Rev. 3:20).
