- The Eparchy of Edmonton will host the “Bishop’s Second Annual Appeal” fundraising events on Thursday, December 1, Chateau Louis Conference Centre, Edmonton. The Annual Bishop’s Appeal “What Gift Have I, Worthy of a King?” takes place on December 4. The Appeal coincides with the Feast of Saint Nicholas, the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra. Saint Nicholas is uniquely tied to Christmas, the celebration of Jesus’ birth. Early stories about Saint Nicholas carry with them the Nativity themes of love and justice. He is characterized as a generous and pious servant of God, caring for children and families, and providing gifts for their spiritual and physical well-being.
And that’s what the Ukrainian Catholic Church is all about. Caring and providing for the faithful throughout the Province of Alberta.

- Eparchial Clergy, Clergy Families, and Religious – Saint Nicholas Gathering, December 27, 11:00 am Divine Liturgy at Saint Josaphat Cathedral, Edmonton (all clergy invited to concelebrate), followed by a Christmas dinner and visit by Saint Nicholas for the children.
Join Bishop David in a relaxing and casual day as the eparchial clergy, their families and women and men religious come together in fellowship to celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord and exchange best wishes of peace, hope and joy for the New Year.
- The 98th World Day of Migrants and Refugees will be celebrated worldwide on January 15. Attached is a copy of Pope Benedict’s message on this occasion.
- The Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood of Canada is sponsoring a “Clergy and Religious Appreciation Evening” on January 17 at Saint Josaphat’s Cathedral Hall (Verkhovyna).
- GriefShare is a weekly meeting and support group to help people as they grieve the death of a family member or friend. This program begins January 17 and meets at 7:00 pm every Tuesday for 11 weeks at Exaltation of the Holy Cross Parish, Edmonton. - Parishes and organizations are once again invited to share the joyous news of Our Lord’s Birth with Bishop David with the age-old custom of Christmas Carolling. Please contact the Chancery Office to schedule a time on January 22, 2012 (1:00 pm – 4:00 pm).
- The Ukrainian Museum Society of Alberta will hold its annual Concert of the Carols, 3:00 pm, Sunday, January 29, 2012, at Saint John Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral.
- “Migrations and New Evangelisation” is the theme chosen by Benedict XVI for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2012, which will be celebrated on January 15, 2012.

- The Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Catholic Church created 3 new metropolias (ecclesiastical provinces) in Ukraine:
- Lviv Metropolia: Lviv, Stryi, Sambir-Drohobych and Sokal-Zhovkva;
- Ivano-Frankivsk Metropolia: Ivano-Frankivsk and Kolomyia-Chernivtsi; and
- Ternopil-Zboriv: Ternopil-Zboriv and Buchach.The first metropolitans of the newly established metropolias are: Archbishop Ihor Voznyak, Lviv; Archbishop Volodymyr Viytyshyn, Ivano-Frankivsk; and Archbishop Vasyl Semeniuk, Ternopil-Zborowski.
- His Beatitude Sviatoslav invites the faithful to join him on pilgrimage to Rome from October 12-14, 2012.“My great predecessor of blessed memory Patriarch Josyf Slipyj, having arrived in Italy after 18 years in prison and hard labour, and being witness to the destruction of churches on his native land, decided to donate to our faithful and bring to the capital of the Christian world, ancient Rome, near the Ukrainian Catholic University, a church of God’s Wisdom as a visible sign of the deeply rooted Christian faith of our nation,” Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk said in a message to the clergy and laity of the Ukrainian Catholic Church about the pilgrimage to Rome. The pilgrimage will take place on the occasion of the blessing of the restored Cathedral of Saint Sophia at the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God, October 14 (Julian Calendar). The date also marks the 120th anniversary since the birth of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj.
- Posted for your information is the Statement issued by Archbishop Richard Smith, President, Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops on the recent Report by the Parliamentary Committee on Palliative and Compassionate Care, entitled Not to be forgotten: Care of Vulnerable Canadians. The report is the result of extensive consultations among groups and organizations across our country, examining a basic and urgent question that concerns most Canadians.As follow-up to this report by the Parliamentary Committee, the Catholic Bishops of Canada will carefully monitor how our national, provincial and municipal institutions implement these important recommendations on palliative care.The Catholic Organization of Life and the Family has available on its website a number of resources to assist our faithful in responding to questions about euthanasia and assisted suicide.
